Our work runs the gamut from voiceover recording & editing to music (both original and library) to file conversion... Heres an overview of the stuff we love to do, and would love to do for you.
Voice Recording
More people come in for this service than any other, so well begin here. Our v/o booth is large and comfortable, and our selection of voice-friendly microphones will put your narration & announce tracks in the best light. David has worked with hundreds of voices youll have skill and experience in your corner. (If your project is looking for voice talent, check out our collection of demos.)
Music Recording
Our room is ideally suited for solo instruments or duos. It's perfect for orchestra musician audition recordings. Ensembles like string quartet would also do well here. A rock band wouldnt we cant accommodate a drum kit. As this is written, were recording a richly hued classical guitar album ... But when it comes to electronic music, our virtual instruments make your choices limitless.”
Field Recording
Sometimes youve got to go to the music; it cant come to you. This was the case with Organi Storici dItalia, Davids CD of historic Italian pipe organs. Also with Rudolf Nureyev's appearance conducting the UCSF Orchestra, and with the radio series Tell Me A Story. We do our music and sfx field recording direct-to-stereo, with a sensational ambient array consisting of a pair of Brüel & Kjær 4006 mics mounted in a Crown SASS-B housing. For voice recording in the field, we'll generally use a more directional mic, such as the AT4050 or Sennheiser 421D.
Original Music
Coming to the commercial arena from a background that embraces classical and avant garde new music, David brings a fresh perspective and the flexibility clients want when they seek an original score to bring their message home.
His scoring highlights have included TV specials for NBC, TBS and Westinghouse Group W; The New York Experience, the National Visitor Center, Connie Fields Rosie the Riveter, the Pacific Aerospace Museum, Readers Digest Films, The Circle of Life, UNICEF, Universal Studios...
...Corporate scoring for Bank of America, National Semiconductor, Signetics, Memorex, TIME, Pacific Bell, Mack Truck, Dole Foods, Thai Airways International, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Shaklee, Grupo ALFA
TV & radio spots for PG&E, Coca-Cola USA, Christian Brothers, Honda, Jantzen, Delta Dental, Mexicana Airlines, Phillipine Airlines, Bazaar del Mundo, Cooks Champagne
to name a few.
Solo riff or full orchestra, electronic or acoustic, David can put a unique and memorable musical stamp on your project. Click here for some samples.
Production Library Music
Music available for licensing production music is a popular choice for projects where music is needed but funding isnt there for original scoring. We have amassed some of the best of about a half dozen production libraries under one roof here at Room 101 for your convenience at licensing rates that wont break your budget. Get the music you need from FirstCom/Music House/Chappell, KPM, Bruton, Sonoton, Omnimusic, Manhattan, and more. David knows where the stuff is, and hell guide you. He also has volumes of his original music available for license.
Production Sound Effects
Our shelves are overflowing with sizzling production sfx from Hollywood Edge, Digiffects, Network and more. They rock, and there are no license fees for their use.
Editing
Narration, music, sound effects all of these will usually demand some editing before a mix, sometimes a lot of editing. Weve been editing for decades, and were very, very good at it. And with Pro Tools onscreen editing, problems that once were hopeless are easily solved, and a world of creative options opens up. Youre in good hands with us we've worked in Pro Tools since there's been a Pro Tools.
Track Layup & Mixing
This is where the rubber hits the road. Whether were designing audio for the Internet or for radio, large format convention presentations or CD, the effective blending of audio elements draws on all our years of experience and accumulated skill. A little bit art, a little bit science, and a lot of fun.
...Our Digidesign Pro Tools|HD system offers 96 tracks of muscle, so layering possibilities are virtually limitless. EQ, dynamics processing, reverb, mix automation and more are all handled within the system. We can mix to your choice of popular file formats, CD, DAT, or analog tape (open reel or cassette).
File Format Conversion
Whatever youve got, to whatever you need.
Improvement/restoration/archiving of your tired, old, but precious recordings
Many of you have treasured recordings in the closet or the attic reel to reel tapes, cassettes, LPs. These are fragile media, and they deteriorate. We turn them into reliable, wear-resistant CDs, and in most cases improve the sound as well. This is not the arcane study you might think, but as with so many things, the careful use of the right tools. Weve had a lot of gratifying success here.
In our view, the studio is just a tool or toolbox for people to use. Talent and skills, personalized attention, and a creative spirit make the difference between a quality audio business and a pile of trophy gear. Thats why at DLP we have always focused on what we can do rather than what we have. It makes sense, and will keep everyones costs down too. (see rates).
